BREVE RESUMEN HISTÓRICO:

De acuerdo con una resolución oficial, el Club Alemán de Perros Pastores Alemanes (Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde, SV) con sede en Augsburg, miembro de la Federación Canina de Alemania (Verband für das Deutsche Hundewesen, VDH), asociación fundadora de la raza, es responsable del estándar del Perro Pastor Alemán. Éste estándar, basado sobre las propuestas de A. Meyer y von Stephanitz, fue desarrollado originalmente en la primera reunión de miembros de la sociedad en Frankfurt/Main el 20 de septiembre de 1899.

 Enmiendas al estándar fueron hechas durante la VI reunión de miembros de la sociedad el 28 de julio de 1901, durante la XXIII reunión de miembros en Colonia el 17 de septiembre de 1909, la Junta Directiva y el Comité de Asesores en Wiesbaden el 5 de septiembre de 1930 y en la reunión de la Junta Directiva y Comité de Cría del 25 de marzo de 1961. El estándar fue revisado y adoptado por la Unión Mundial de Perros Pastores Alemanes (Weltunion für Deutsche Schäferhunde, WUSV) el 30 de agosto de 1976 y nuevamente revisado y catalogado como fue resuelto por la Junta Directiva y el Comité de Asesores el 23 y 24 de marzo de 1991.

El perro Pastor Alemán, cuya crianza planeada y reglamentada se inició en el año 1899, después de la fundación del S.V., fue originalmente desarrollado por cruce con perros pastores disponibles en Alemania del Sur y Central, con la meta final de crear un perro de utilidad versátil altamente apropiado para trabajos muy exigentes. Para lograr este objetivo, el estándar del perro Pastor Alemán fue desarrollado enfatizando una estructura física correcta y particularmente un temperamento estable y un buen carácter.
